Most people are already familar with the practice of cloning out unwanted areas in a picture but thanks to Ray for his simple way to ensure that you do not accidentally clone over a wanted area.

Select the area - or the edge of the area - to be retained perhaps by using magic wand or one of the lasso tools, then invert the selection. Obviously, if it is as easy to directly select the area to discard then use that option - then there will be no need to invert the selection.

Best results may be achieved by using a mix of selection tools - magic wand, lasso, etc.


Go on to clone the unwanted area as normal but now without worrying about the edges of the area you wish to retain.
